ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Since retiring in 2000 from her position as a Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Old Dominion University, Nancy Topping Bazin has devoted her life to art. She has studied drawing and painting with many outstanding teachers in Hampton Roads, most recently with Suzanne Stevens, Nancy Dooley, and Norman Goodwin. To date, she has participated in ten week-long workshops with nationally-known artists, such as Skip Lawrence, Fran Larsen, Gerald Brommer, and Christopher Schink.
Having shown her work in various art centers and galleries, Nancy now actively participates in two artists’ cooperatives in Virginia Beach. She is an Exhibiting Artist at the Artists Gallery and one of the five Managing Artists at the Pembroke 4 Art Gallery. Her works are continuously on display at both sites.
In addition, Nancy participates in exhibits by the Tidewater Art Alliance, the Chesapeake Bay Watercolorists, the Virginia Flower and Garden Show, and the Hampton Art League. She has won fourteen awards in the Senior Art Fests in Norfolk and displays her work in the annual Colonial Place-Riverview Art Walk.
Nancy’s paintings convey her delight in seeing unusual faces, colorful scenes, and aesthetic patterns. She works with a variety of materials--watercolor, pastel, gouache, acrylic, and mixed media.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“In my painting I always transform the color of what I see. Therefore, I am a ‘colorist’ and sometimes a bit of a fantasist. I am increasingly fascinated by designs, whether they are man-made or found in nature. Thus, patterns and lines are becoming central to my style, and my work has moved away from realism toward the imaginative and playful.” www.nancytoppingbazin.com
